Workplace Morale is Going to the Dogs… Literally!
There are few greater feelings than a dog’s unconditional love. And some are finding that a dog’s love can help combat stress at work. Secretary Zinke of the Interior Department announced his intent for "Doggy Days" where he encouraged employees to bring their canine companions to work on designated days. More than 80 dogs arrived for first event and the overjoyed employees immediately scheduled the next. Owners provided proof the dogs were housebroken, supplied vaccine records, and confirmed there was no history of behavioral issues. Despite these rules for the health and safety of all, Doggy Days was a massive success.
But there’s more to bringing Rover to the office than just some tail wagging – for employees and employers. Allowing dogs in the office aims to reduce employee stress and improve morale and retention. The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Center for Human-Animal Interaction found that canines in the office fostered stronger collaboration which increased productivity. Canines offer a natural talking topic between coworkers and clients, which can bridge social gaps to enhance creativity. Employers must weigh the costs and benefits, but the Department of Interior’s successful “Doggy Days” proves it can be rewarding.
Employers have multiple options to bring furry companions to the office. They can permit employees’ dogs in the office on pre-approved days, enable dog-friendly community service, or bring shelter dogs who need forever homes to the workplace for a day.
Arc Aspicio likes to get in on the action. Each September we host a dog and their handler – fully trained by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) – at an event that helps us raise awareness and money for this great cause. The SDF partners rescued dogs with firefighters and first responders to search for missing persons and save lives in the aftermath of disasters, including 9/11, Superstorm Sandy, earthquakes in Nepal, and a tsunami in Japan. This year, Ben and his handler Eric Darling will join our event on September 26th.
If you’d like to help us support the SDF, please contact the Arc Aspicio team at interns@arcaspicio.com to donate to our silent auction or get involved. #BarcAspicio #searchdogfdn #forthedogs
