One SILab, 30 Professionals, 2 Hours, 50 Bold Ideas to Combat Human Trafficking
Human trafficking, whether it be labor or sex trafficking, is a complex crime where victims may not even recognize they are victims. This makes it hard for law enforcement professionals to identify and prosecute it, and for victims to find the extensive support they need to participate in the legal process. The mission to fight human trafficking is complex, but Arc Aspicio is dedicated and proactive in fighting this prevalent crime.
In 2012, Arc Aspicio started working with the Human Smuggling and Trafficking Center, a national intelligence fusion center designed to combat human trafficking at a national level across multiple departments and agencies. We helped create a first-of-its-kind National Human Trafficking Assessment that collected, wrangled, and analyzed data from 18 different Federal agencies that play a part in fighting this crime. 350 pages later, a unique view into the complexity of the crime across the United States became a mission for our company and our leaders.
This led to work with the McCain Institute, where we helped create an assessment to assist the justice sector in combating trafficking in the United States. This assessment considers the perspectives of state and local stakeholders from more than 17 cities and 17 corresponding rural locations from law enforcement including officers, detectives, prosecutors, and judges to non-profit organizations to victim services providers. Through this, we recommended a bold and powerful nationwide solution that received full support from a non-profit donor for implementation.
We have also worked pro bono for non-profit organizations who support victims, such as Courtney’s House and the Amara Legal Center, which rounded out our understanding of the mission from many other perspectives.
For me, though, our recent Strategy and Innovation Lab (SILab) Salon event is something I am really proud of. The SILab is a knowledge hub that accelerates innovative and sustainable solutions through methods, tools, thought leadership, events, and other resources to help our people, partners, and clients solve complex problems. The SILab hosted Innovative Ideas to Combat Human Trafficking – A Conversation in November 2019. Nearly 30 professionals with experience combating human trafficking in law enforcement, victim services non-profits, academia, and the private sector participated with a survivor in our strategic conversation. The unique format teed up these powerful questions:
To reduce human trafficking nationally, what is one bold idea
How do we make victims less vulnerable?
What trends may cause human trafficking to increase?
The result? More than 50 bold ideas to combat human trafficking. And this is just the beginning. Stay tuned for more of what we learned and what we’ll do next in our journey to combat human trafficking.
