Making a Difference
I am one of a handful of people at Arc Aspicio that are “remote.” We are full time teleworkers. I have only been in person with fellow team members a few times in four years at Arc Aspicio. Yet, our culture comes through in our intranet, Initio, and the daily conversations we have in our Yammer social tool. Initio wires me right in. Whether my peers are our project site, working from their home, or on the road between meetings at coffee shops and airport terminals, we have a camaraderie that transcends distance.
People on our project and throughout Arc Aspicio are passionate about their projects. Not only the unique missions we get to support, but making those missions better each day. At a recent All Hands meeting (one I was fortunate to attend in person!), I was reminded of this fiery passion as I watched my peers present on their work and its daily impact on our nation’s security. From how the public is alerted, to airport screening designs, to visa program improvements, to supporting consequence management. and improving our partners information sharing, we get to do good work and see tangible results.
This is a place that lives its culture, makes a difference in all that we do, and keeps me coming back every day.

We’ve all been there, a moment in a past job where you ask yourself if your work really matters. You are approaching mid-career and what matters more to you now is seeing your work make a difference. I knew that I wanted to spend more time “doing” homeland security, rather than writing policy memos about what other people were doing. With this mindset, I walked into my interview with Arc Aspicio four years ago. My question for my interviewer—how do your people make a difference every day?
At Arc Aspicio, I am “doing” homeland security daily. On my project, I am often asked what it is that I actually do. And while I know my way around IT Project Management and SharePoint, IT is not what I really do. What I do is build relationships. I link people together who have pieces of the puzzle that come together to make a sensational outcome. Through our outreach, we build trust with those partners and build real communities. If a guy in Topeka is looking for an answer, we might know someone in DC who has innovated an IT solution. When a big event rolls into town, we can bring the lessons learned from the last event and achieve results faster. From supporting dozens of agencies in operation centers, to a deep dive on training and exercise challenges with emergency managers, to building out a SharePoint site, to presenting at national conferences and to briefing a governor’s staff, every day is unique.
