NPM 2010: Get a Kit
The first step to being prepared for a major disaster is creating an emergency supply kit. During emergencies, you may often need to survive on your own for a period of time. Supply kits are recommended to contain provisions that will last for at least three days.
In addition to food and water, a basic emergency kit should contain a first aid kit, a whistle to signal for help, and a flashlight with extra batteries. A full list of necessary items can be found here. Remember to tailor your kit to fit the specific needs of your family. Families with babies, elderly adults, and those with disabilities may need to include additional items in their supply kit.
Also, don't leave out your pets! Make sure to create an animal emergency supply kit and develop a buddy system with neighbors, friends and relatives to make sure someone is able to care for your pets if you are unable to do so. Click here for more information and a pet preparedness toolkit.
