The Comprehensive National
Cybersecurity Initiative
On January 8th, 2008, then President George W. Bush issued National Security Presidential Directive 54 which called for the formation of the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI). The Bush administration developed CNCI to improve how the federal government protects sensitive information from hackers. Since 2008, numerous security experts have expressed concern over the classified nature of the CNCI.
Cybersecurity is clearly a focus point of the Obama administration. Obama has proposed significant portions of DHS and DoD budgets be reserved for cybersecurity. Despite these investments, the House Committee on Science and Technology recently echoed concern over the secrecy of the CNCI. The initiative's budget officially has been kept secret but has been estimated to be $40b spread over several years.
